Two days ago, I was discussing the lyrics of the Healthy Song. I got them to sing each paragraph which has different themes. The first theme was about food. I wrote out the keywords of that paragraph which were ‘grow’ and ‘energy’. I prompted questions like “How do food make you grow?”, “How does food give you energy?” These are questions are fairly easy for the students to answer.
The words that they didn’t recognize were ‘decay’ and ‘illness’ in the third verse which talks about hygiene. It is funny how one topic can lead to many possibilities. We end up talking about Aedes mosquitoes and Denggi fever. A very common affair in Malaysia. The students were very keen about this particular discussion. Some were inspired to make sure their house is dry from any stagnant water. Some on the more naughty side would want to purposely place stagnant water in the house in order to kill these dangerous mosquitoes. How imaginative.
Although I did not achieve my other goal for this class which is engage them in creating their long/short sound patterns, this is the first time I had some such a meaningful discussion with them.
